On a course soaked from heavy rainfall, the Emerson cross-country teams made quite a splash at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship meet Saturday morning.

The men finished second out of nine teams and the women came in fourth out of 13 teams on the wet turf at Rivier College in Nashua, N.,On a course soaked from heavy rainfall, the Emerson cross-country teams made quite a splash at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship meet Saturday morning.

The men finished second out of nine teams and the women came in fourth out of 13 teams on the wet turf at Rivier College in Nashua, N.H.

For the men, Senior Captain John Weselcouch finished fifth overall, with freshman Collin Gately coming right behind him in sixth. Gately also took home Rookie of the Year honors for the league. The team’s record for the season was 37-12.

For the women, freshman Ariel Tweto finished second overall in the women’s meet and was also named Rookie of the Year. The women finished proud with a 36-14 record.

One match still remains on the season for the Lions. They will take part in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship Meet this Saturday.

That meet will mark the final race of the careers for five seniors: captains Weselcouch and Nate Larkin-Connolly for the men, and Leah Wyner, Lindsey Chabot and Amy Kitson for the women.

Chabot was pleased with the way the women performed.

“Despite the conditions, we had girls improving times, having fun, feeling good; we had four in the top 20,” she said. “It was awesome. People fell, got wet, dirty and cold, but everyone was smiling after.”

Coach Jim Furey was also content with the way his teams performed this season.

“This was the best showing in the fourth year of the team for the men,” he said. “Overall, it was a really good year for both teams.”
