Get out your lobster bibs and bring on the chowdah, Spoon University is coming to Emerson.
SpoonUniversity.com is a food and lifestyle blog that produces listicles—similar to Buzzfeed’s—with a focus on people under the age of 25. There are over 3,000 contributors and over 100 chapters at colleges nationwide, including Boston College and New York University, according to the website.
Krista D’Archi, a sophomore journalism major, spearheaded the effort to get the blog to Emerson. A frequent reader of the website and Buzzfeed community contributor, she took it upon herself to get her fellow students involved.
“Everyone here loves food, and we’re in an amazing location,” D’Archi said. “We have so much access to so many different cultures here in Boston. We should be writing about food more.”
D’Archi said she has been in contact with Spoon University since early September. She created a petition that required 300 signatures in a week to create the college’s chapter, which she publicized on Facebook and other social media. Although it started slow at first, she said she got the amount she needed after she set up a table in Piano Row.
Now that the chapter is approved, D’Archi is looking for writers, editors, photographers, videographers, and event planners to work on the site. There is a Google form on emerson.spoonuniversity.com to apply for any position.
D’Archi said she would like to hold themed events relating to the website, such as inviting local food vendors for an event in the area. She said she is confident that students will want to join.
Mary Ricardo, a freshman marketing communication major, said she is looking to get involved with the Emerson chapter.
“I’ve been looking around for what to join [at Emerson], and this really appealed to me,” Ricardo said. “My suitemates and myself are all new to Boston, and we all want to see what’s good to eat here.”
