Apple picking offers late-autumn activity

But don’t let the change in temperature cause you to waste away the days until Thanksgiving.,As October comes to a close and our minds wander from trick-or-treats to turkey eats, the autumn chill that is finally descending on the city and the added stress of midterms may confine us to our dorm rooms.

But don’t let the change in temperature cause you to waste away the days until Thanksgiving. Take a breather from the endless hours of Shakespeare and Darwinism. You can make a contribution to the holiday festivities, while also getting some fresh air, by setting aside the books for the day and taking a trip to the Cider Hill Farm.

Located in Amesbury, MA, this farm is a way to have fun and support energy conservation at the same time. According to their Web site, as of 2006 they had received three grants from the Massachusetts Technology Cooperative that would help them to build wind turbines which would provide them with on-farm electrical energy. At the farm, you can pick apples, go on a hayride, travel through a corn or hay maze or have a picnic.

“All types of people come here,” said Sheena Farmer, a representative of the farm.

“There’s not tons to do in this area, so it’s a big thing for people here.”

And while there may be tons to do in Boston, you’re not likely to find much apple-picking.

Hours: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day until Thanksgiving. Take the commuter rail to Newbury Port, and get a taxi from there.

Prices: $1.49 a pound
