When construction begins on the college’s Hollywood satellite campus, the trash-strewn dirt parking lot on 6004 Sunset Bvld. will give way to a futuristic 10-story structure.

The Los Angeles campus center will house 220 students, three-stories of underground parking, and a cafe, said Andrew Tiedemann, vice president of communications and marketing.

Most residents will live in single bedrooms in a structure arching over a courtyard and classrooms, according to renderings from Morphosis, renowned architect Thom Mayne’s LA-based firm known for its work on dozens of post-modern federal and collegiate buildings.

“Planning for the Los Angeles initiative continues to move forward,” Tiedemann said yesterday in an e-mail to the Beacon. “However, we don’t have a project timeline that I can share with you at this time.”

Tiedemann said that soon after the city approved the project–estimated by the Los Angeles Business Journal to cost $85 million dollars—East West Studios LLC, a recording studio located across the street from the 37,000 square foot lot, filed a lawsuit against the school last September.

According to the architectural blog Curbed LA, the studio feared the loud construction equipment next door would disrupt sound recording, making it impossible to work.

In October, Tiedemann said the college was negotiating a deal with East West Studios to compensate them for lost recording time during the building process.

Tiedemann said yesterday the suit was active.
