At Tuesday’s Student Government Association meeting, President Emily Solomon led a discussion about the organization’s plans for the semester and ongoing issues at the college.

Members discussed a potential fund for sustainability initiatives, safety issues in dorms, and their hopes to expand awareness of the SGA around campus.

Sustainability Liaison Emma Friend discussed the idea of a donor-based fund for sustainability projects. The organization will revisit the concept this year, after Friend discussed the idea with Eric Van Vlandren, the college’s campus sustainability coordinator, last year.

Tori Loubert, the class of 2016 senator, said that a mirror in her suite fell off of the wall because it wasn’t hung up properly and that shards of glass covered her suite floor.

“If someone had been standing there, at a minimum they would have suffered severe injuries,” Loubert is quoted as saying in a transcript of the meeting provided to the Beacon. “I want to know if these buildings are being monitored.”

SGA members discussed how safety issues are handled by the Office of Housing and Residence Life and the room check procedures done at the start and end of the school year.

Members also talked about what they saw as a lack of visibility for SGA among students, and agreed they needed to alert more people about the organization.

Jasmine Reyes, who was the elections chair but resigned during the meeting, said SGA’s mission gets lost when people don’t know about the group.

“SGA needs to be more personal,” Reyes said in the transcript. “How can we get people to understand who we are and what we do and utilize us for what we can do for them?”

Members brainstormed ways to combat their lack of visibility on campus, including starting a newsletter, distributing merchandise, and appointing a public relations chair.

Seven students resigned from their positions, and three were appointed to new positions, according to the transcript. A special election has now begun for senators for the marketing communications, journalism, communication sciences and disorders, and communication studies departments. Elections packets for candidates are due Feb. 10, and polls will open online on Feb. 25.
