Last Thursday The Beacon ran a cover story featuring two new student publications: em magazine and The Emerson Conservative.
Credit where credit is due: em magazine seems to be a respectable read.
But front-page attention paid to a “news”paper like The Conservative, whose chief author has published editorials in The Beacon calling for the reinstation of the draft, defending alcoholic Congressional page-pesterer Mark Foley and demanding the removal of homeless people from the Emerson campus, serves only to inflate the already false sense of importance palpable in the snarky prose of Emerson’s first “conservative” publication.,Dear Editor,

But front-page attention paid to a “news”paper like The Conservative, whose chief author has published editorials in The Beacon calling for the reinstation of the draft, defending alcoholic Congressional page-pesterer Mark Foley and demanding the removal of homeless people from the Emerson campus, serves only to inflate the already false sense of importance palpable in the snarky prose of Emerson’s first “conservative” publication.
The gentlemen responsible for The Conservative, after all, certainly seem to be getting their rocks off with this freshman effort. The prevailing (though often false) notion is that Emerson students ascribe to some mainstream notion of free-loving liberalism and that we’re homogeneously anti-establishment in an uninformed, Hot Topic sort of way.
Sure, rebellion can be sexy, but the spirit just isn’t the same if all your friends are reading the same blogs you are.
It must be fun for Mr. Primeau and his merry band to disseminate their counter-counterculture, taking the spirit of free-thinking rebellion to an even more exclusive plateau. For a band of self-proclaimed political underdogs, these mavericks have aways to go before they realize: Getting your jollies by propagating knee-jerk contrarianism isn’t going to garner you many supporters.
