The Hill Tavern is a refreshing alternative to stuffy Beacon Hill restaurants

Next door to Starbucks and across from chains such as Whole Foods and Au Bon Pain, the Hill Tavern’s yellow and orange sign is hardly noticeable.,Known for upscale restaurants and eateries, Beacon Hill also has one hole-in-the-wall tavern that would be a shame to miss.

Next door to Starbucks and across from chains such as Whole Foods and Au Bon Pain, the Hill Tavern’s yellow and orange sign is hardly noticeable.

This restaurant has all the fixings of a traditional pub, but the food is unexpectedly tasty.

Every good pub should be evaluated on its Buffalo wings ($7.95), and the Hill Tavern’s are perfectly crisp.

Sometimes they are overloaded with sauce, so be sure to get your Buffalo sauce on the side.

If you’re not up for getting your hands dirty, the tavern boasts the best boneless Buffalo wings around, with just enough breading and just the right amount of sauce-. They are also definitely the right price at $7.95.

The burgers are also amazing and reasonably priced at $7.95, with add-ons like bleu cheese, mushrooms and crispy bacon (75 cents per topping).

The fries ($3.95) come in the form of sweet potato and potato wedges. Don’t worry, you can specify which you prefer.

They are delicious but are not always consistent between visits. Fries can range from barely cooked to almost burnt, but when made just right, they are to die for.

The Hill Tavern has more that just the traditional bar offerings; the scallop and spinach appetizer ($9.95) is surprisingly delectable. The scallops are tender and juicy and the cheese-covered spinach is perfectly prepared.

The dimly lit dining room is lined with black tables and mostly tall, wooden chairs. It can be a relaxing atmosphere on a slow day, but like most pubs the Hill

Tavern is bustling with business most nights and weekends.

The half-priced appetizers between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. could explain the crowds. This Beacon Hill pub is a great atmosphere on game nights, with its multiple HDTVs placed at different vantage points.

The service varies depending on how busy the bar scene is. Waitresses often disappear between dropping off the order and leaving the check, making you long for another drink.

Above all, be sure to save room for the heavenly Molten Brownie dessert ($5.95) served with a choice of ice cream.

This tasty tavern gives college students an affordable alternative in pricey Beacon Hill, and its eclectic menu will keep crowds coming back for more.

The Hill Tavern is located at 228 Cambridge St. in Beacon Hill.
