Two Student Government Association officials—the Greek Council commissioner and the class of 2014 senator—announced Tuesday that they will resign after serving a mere seven weeks of their terms.

Both commissioner Mari Watson and senator Christine Hayes stepped down citing health problems. Watson said she has an indeterminate health condition and is undergoing tests, while Hayes said she was unable to balance her workload because of a pre-diagnosed ailment.

Watson was appointed to the newly created position of Greek Council commissioner at the Sept. 20 SGA meeting, approved by a unanimous Senate vote. While she will be leaving SGA for the remainder of the semester, the junior said she hopes to return in the spring as Greek council commissioner or to another commissioner seat.

“My resignation had nothing to do with anyone but myself,” the communication sciences and disorders major said in an email. “It is not ideal, but I cannot even remotely serve my constituents if I cannot take care of myself.”

Hayes has served as the current sophomore class’ senator since Oct. 2010 and also serves on a student advisory committee with the office of enrollment, a position she said she intends to keep.

“Because of health issues, I have had to stop doing a lot of organizations. The job of senator is one that I initially kept,” Hayes said. “It takes a lot of time and dedication to the SGA and the Senate, and I would rather someone who has the time to take over.”

Jon Allen, class of 2014 president, said that while he is sad to see Hayes leave, he hopes a member of his class will step into the position with a strong commitment to SGA.

“We are looking for people who are dedicated to the class,” Allen said. “Anyone interested can email me or anyone on SGA.”

Michele Mertens, PR commissioner, said the resignations are not official until the group discusses them at the next meeting. At that point, she said, there will be a plan to fill the open seats.
