The college is creating an administrative position that will focus on space planning and oversee the two residence hall construction projects.

According to Maureen Murphy, vice president for administration and finance, the new hire will be titled Senior Associate Vice President for Real Estate. She said the administration began developing the role when Jay Phillips, former associate vice president for facilities and campus services, left the college for a position at Partners HealthCare over the summer.

Murphy said Phillips focused on both day-to-day facilities management and overseeing construction and development projects. When he left, Murphy said she had an opportunity to reevaluate his former position.

Duncan Pollock moved from his position as Director of Building Operations to Interim Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Services, but he will mainly focus on campus facilities. Murphy said this new position will handle space in terms of the future.

“I need someone to focus on the planning, and less on the operational,” Murphy said.

Along with deciding where to put the first floor offices and dining hall that will be displaced when the Little Building renovations begin in 2017, Murphy said there are other spaces already on campus that need to be reexamined.

“When they moved the campus from the Back Bay to here, and they acquired buildings, they moved people in areas that, when I see them now, don’t make sense,” Murphy said about the college’s move to the Theater District in the 1990s.

She said the main example is the Facilities Management department, located on the fourth floor of the Walker Building, which she said should be moved out of the academic building.

Murphy said that administration is still working on finding potential candidates for this new vice president position, and plans to have the position filled by January 2016.
