Athletic department goes yard in its sale

Numerous sweatshirts, game-worn jerseys, shorts, and T-shirts, all representing various Emerson sports teams, lined tables and chairs in the Skybox above the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym last week, transforming what is usually a student lounge into a two-day Emerson College sports consignment shop.

The athletics yard sale, run primarily by assistant athletic director Lindsay DeStefano Colbert, was advertised on the athletics website as open to the Emerson community. According to DeStefano, the campus answered.

“There were a lot of athletes who were very excited about it, DeStefano said, “but also a good number of staff and faculty came down, so I think it was a really good turnout.”

Fall cleaning was in full swing, influenced by the influx of new uniforms and team gear bearing the sports logo that was introduced into athletic programs last year. This required more space in storage closets, filled up by old jerseys that were no longer in use and apparel that had never been worn.

“It had been so long since we did something like this,” DeStefano said. “We had a lot of buildup of excess equipment and apparel that just wasn’t necessary.”

While the clothes went to homes other than their previous brown boxes, DeStefano said the money is going right back to the athletic programs for more uniforms and other equipment for student athletes.

By noon on the second day, as the clean-up process ensued, DeStefano estimated that the total amount of money made was well over a thousand dollars. This meant over two hundred jerseys and articles of clothing, all five dollars apiece, had been sold.

Emerson College Police Department officer Mike O’Connor was the last participant in the sale. He said that the opportunity to support Emerson athletics and put money back into the community couldn’t be beat. He picked out some shorts and jerseys for his two daughters, both soccer players.

“It’s great,” O’Connor said. “It’s something they can wear to practice and show off.”

DeStefano said that overall, the results of the event were positive, and when asked about future sales, she said that the effort was definitely something worth repeating.

“I would love to do something like this again, because I thought that everyone involved really enjoyed it,” DeStefano said. “We are extremely excited with the success of the yard sale.”
