Basketball teams ball off the court, too

The Emerson women’s basketball team has the most players recognized by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference for academic success, the conference announced on Feb. 23.

The women’s team had seven players named to the Academic All-Conference Team, determined at the end of each season, which was two more than the second-ranked school, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The men’s basketball team had two players earn the honor.

To be eligible, a student must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be at least a sophomore, and have been a member of the team all season, according to the NEWMAC website. Last year, each basketball team had three players recognized.

Matt Ulrich, the associate head coach for men’s lacrosse and director of media relations for the Lions, said the athletic department tries to set its players up for educational success, so he wasn’t surprised by the recognition.

“Athletics helps you manage your time,” said Ulrich, who graduated from Emerson in 2013 and played on the lacrosse team. “You’re so busy with your sport that when you’re not on the court you really have to hustle with your academics. You see kids down in the Skybox [above the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium] all the time working on projects together and writing papers.”

The student-athletes recognized were seniors Michael Lucas, Kristin Brice, and Catherine Cloutier; juniors Janissa Delzo, Kelsey Johnson, and Mike Carbone; and sophomores Olivia Still, Maria Santora, and Emily Cameron.
