I found the editorial “SGA spending scandal an embarrassment” in the Feb. 14 edition of The Beacon a new low for Emerson’s student run newspaper. The editors of The Beacon commend John Tyson and Chance Dorland for quitting their positions in SGA due to the vote on Hand Me Down Night’s budget. What is forgotten in both the editorial and the article written by Matt Byrne and Maria Chutchian is the unprofessional behavior exhibited by both Tyson and Dorland. Tyson left the SGA meeting after the vote for Hand Me Down Night, leaving three appeals without a vote from the largest department, VMA. Tyson left the SGA meeting before the EIV appeal, completely disregarding his job and responsibilities to his department. The Beacon may think this behavior deserves “kudos,” however, their attempt at protest does not help Tyson and Dorland’s cause, it disallows them from having any impact on SGA’s spending.

Also, The Beacon writes that Fisher’s campaign for presidency shows a lack of seriousness because of his freshman status and absence of competition on the ballot. However, they forget to mention that he ran against numerous other people as write-in-candidates. Fisher should be commended for his ambitious campaign as a freshman. The amount of candidates on the ballot shows a lack of seriousness in the Emerson population, not SGA.
