In a small ceremony on the 10th floor of the Walker building on Oct. 16, students, educators and administrators gathered to dedicate a mural inside the establishment to the structure itself.

After a naming contest held by the artist of the painting Josué Rojas, Robert Amelio, the director of diversity education and human relations; Isabella Gordillo, an Emerson senior political communication major; and Sylvia Spears, vice president of diversity and inclusion, the decision was made.

“Carnaval de la Vida” or “Carnival of Life” was submitted by Angelika Romero, the class of 2015 president. The senior journalism major said she felt the mural was a giant, abstract party. Romero’s submission was chosen over about 40 name suggestions.

Many community members participated in the painting of the mural.

“The only prerequisite was being a human being,” Rojas said about his creation. He said he wanted to create something energetic, fun, and exciting that incorporated as much of the diversity of the student body as possible.
