Spend Saturday with one of literature’s most tumultuous marriages, as Mercutio Troupe presents The Landscape Project. The staged reading, conceived by Lauren Scovel, delves into the doomed relationship between Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes.
Composed entirely of the pair’s words, the project sprinkles selections from Hughes’ poetry collection Birthday Letters onto the story of The Bell Jar.Plath’s landmark novel was inspired by her time at McLean Hospital in nearby Belmont. The hope is that Birthday Letters, largely a rumination on Plath, will provide deeper context to her confrontation of mental illness. It’ll be like couples counseling for the depressive literary genius crowd.
