Fashion statements that were once permanent are becoming easier and cheaper, with temporary tattoos and fake septum rings being the new perfect adornments for anyone who treads a fine line between badass and basic.

Temporary tats, or flash tattoos, are an easy way out of having to commit to the permanency and cost of a real tattoo. Septum piercings—just under the cartilage on the wall between the nostrils—can also be done temporarily, which eliminates the pain and cost of a real piercing. Because tattoos and septum rings are peaking in popularity, there is no better time to try out—or simply fake having—either.

Septum piercings: embrace your edge

Delicate and bold septum rings are being rocked by numerous celebrity style icons including Zoe Kravitz, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and even Scarlett Johansson, who momentarily dabbled in the look. Although these may be alluring features on their faces, many people do not actually want to endure the painful two seconds of having a staple placed through their septum, or pay upward of $50, just to change their minds about it two weeks later.

Fashion is an ever-changing set of trends, and if septum rings are out by next month, you don’t want to be the one with the staple stuck in your nose. 

But because septum rings are very much in right now, there is a temporary solution. This is where any simple, fake septum ring comes into play. Not only are they inexpensive to buy, they’re easy to put in and take out. Above all else, they look real. It’s a simple way to legitimize your unauthentic edge.

Now, this is not to negate the inner rebel that may be hiding inside of you. Our generation is just so quick to jump to corporeal adornment that we don’t always take the time to think about the holes or ink we’re putting into our bodies.

Another benefit to this simple solution is that if your false septum ring is being well received by yourself and others, you could eventually decide to get a real one, already knowing whether it fits your face and sense of style. Flash tattoos: show some skin

Queen B recently sported Flash Tattoo’s Josephine armbands, which are a combination of thick gold bands, a silver linked chain, and a diamond inspired “bracelet.” Katie Holmes even tried on the Child of Wild tattoo, an egyptian symbol-inspired print, on her forearm during New York Fashion Week. These celebrities have helped popularize Flash Tattoo’s product, and its Instagram account now has over 285,000 followers. 

These particular flash tattoos are a cool way to accessorize and to avoid the burden of losing costly jewelry. Because you have the freedom to place it anywhere on your skin, you can accentuate a certain part of your body that you otherwise may not be able to. For example, you could place a flash tat down your spine, along your upper arm, or on your rib cage.

I personally jumped the gun in getting both tattooed and pierced, as many quintessential young rebels do. I made the decision to get a tattoo at age 16. At the time, I felt proud of myself for successfully lying about my age and accomplishing a trivial goal. But the little music note that adorns the left side of my rib cage was not one of my brightest ideas. I hadn’t put much thought or care into what was permanently being placed on my body.

Earlier this year, I was inspired by Zoe Kravitz’s new septum piercing, and became highly motivated to get one just like it. This time, instead of hauling over to the nearest piercing parlor, I ordered a $7 fake septum ring online. Although this piercing was well liked by both my friends and my conservative mother, I realized I did not want to commit to having a hoop in my nose everyday, simply because it only fit some aspects of my personal style. 

Both flash tattoos and fake septum peircings are great ways to individualize your look without the long-term commitment of a piercing or a tattoo. If you’re like me and change your mind about virtually everything you do at least once a week, there is no better place to look for amping up your style.
