MEN’S BASKETBALL

Record: 10-9, 3-5 NEWMAC

Feb. 1: Babson 77, Emerson 71 (OT)

Player of the Game: Jon Goldberg

Senior captain Jon Goldberg led the Lions (10-9, 3-5 NEWMAC) with 23 points and nine rebounds as he played all 45 minutes in a dramatic overtime heartbreaker after finishing regulation tied at 59. Goldberg hit a jumper with 26 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Sophomore Michael Thorpe contributed a versatile 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Eli Kell-Abrams added 10 points on three 3-pointers to go with six rebounds and another five assists. Brian Hurley chipped in 13 points and six rebounds as those four combined for 62 of Emerson’s 71 points. The Lions absorbed 43 points from Babson (14-5, 5-3) freshman Joey Flannery. Although Emerson led for more than half of the game, it trailed for the entire overtime period.

 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Record: 7-12, 3-11 NEWMAC

 

Feb. 1: Springfield 67, Emerson 48

Player of the Game: Emily Cameron

Freshman Emily Cameron broke out for a career-high 23 points in her first start as the Lions (7-12, 3-11 NEWMAC) fell in a home loss to the Pride (11-9, 7-8). Cameron played 37 minutes, draining seven 3-pointers. Her previous scoring high was 11 points, set in the game prior against Wheaton. Another freshman, Elizabeth Horan, hit three more 3-pointers for Emerson off the bench, but no other player exceeded four points. Kelsey Johnson suffered through a poor night from the field, but had four points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Emerson committed 29 turnovers and also lost the rebounding battle, 44-33.

 

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Record: 3-3, 0-1 GNAC

Jan. 31: Kean 3, Emerson 0

Player of the Match: Brendan McGonigle

Setter Brendan McGonigle had 21 assists, but also contributed four digs and two kills as the visiting Lions (2-2) fell in straight sets to Kean (2-3) by scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 25-19. Jackson Wiley led Emerson with eight kills, while freshman Stanson Afoa followed him with six. Jared Gross had a team-leading six digs.

Player of the Match: Jared Gross

Sophomore Jared Gross piled up 14 digs to lead the defensive side as the visiting Lions fell in the second match of a doubleheader, 25-16, 25-21, and 25-21. Classmate Jackson Wiley led Emerson (3-3) with 11 kills against Cairn (2-1), while Dmitri Gorenc had nine and Stanson Afoa seven. The freshman Afoa also had eight digs. Wiley and Brendan McGonigle (27 assists) each had five digs.

Player of the Match: Jackson Wiley

Jackson Wiley pounded 15 kills and had four digs as Emerson (3-2) dominated the Gothic Knights (0-3) in straight sets, 25-13, 25-18, and 25-19. Dmitri Gorenc and Beacon assistant sports editor Connor Burton each contributed eight kills. Sophomore setter Brendan McGonigle collected 30 assists and eight digs, while Stanson Afoa had five kills and eight digs, and defensive specialist Jared Gross led the team with nine digs.

Assistant sports editor Mike Lucas did not write or edit men’s basketball recaps because he is a member of the team. Assistant sports editor Connor Burton did not edit men’s volleyball recaps because he is a member of the team, or women’s basketball because he is dating a member of the team.
