After a hard-fought campaign that captured voters’ attention and spurred a huge jump in voter turnout over recent years, Fisher said he was proud of his supporters.,Student Government Association President Scott Fisher has won his reelection bid, making him the first three-term SGA president in recent memory.

Sixty percent of 1,036 voters chose Fisher over his challenger, Performing Arts Senator Nick Vargas, according to data provided by Election Commissioner Danielle Iacovelli.

“I was very proud. I’m proud of my supporters for keeping it professional throughout the entire campaign,” Fisher said in an interview. “I tried to focus on the issues and I’m glad it paid off. I’m glad it worked out.”

Vargas led a vigorous challenge to Fisher, who had already won two presidential elections. The hard-fought campaign helped spur huge voter participation. Fisher said the turnout of more than 1,000 voters was more than twice the number of people who cast ballots last year. He noted that Vargas got more votes this year than Fisher did in winning last year, and that the total is more than one-third of all Emerson students.

“It’s been really great, I’m glad that people took the time to turn out,” Fisher said. “People remembered this time because there was so much at stake.”

There has only been one SGA president who was elected for a second term in the last 30 years, according to an e-mail message from Assistant Dean of Students Sharon Duffy.

In a phone interview, Vargas said he was pleased with the increased turnout.

“I think the students definitely came out and voted this year, which is good,” Vargas said. “They were involved in this election compared to the past. I’m really proud of that fact.”

Vargas said even though he lost the election, he felt his campaign had helped to increase student interest in the SGA.

“I was really proud of what I did,” he said. “Whatever the outcome was, the students definitely know more about SGA [now.]”

“[I had] disappointment in the loss, but not in the overall outcome of student awareness,” Vargas said.

Down the ballot, sophomore Morgan St. John won a 15-point victory over junior Jacob Barela. Treasurer Jenn Barry, who was running for reelection unopposed, will round out SGA’s Executive Board with Fisher and St. John.
