As the lights went down at MGM Music Hall on Sept. 2, the opening chords of Goose’s “All I Need” began after the more than 5,000 seat venue shouted—“Goooooooose.”
This performance marked the second show of Goose’s 2024 fall tour and the start of their three-night run in Boston. The mix of Goose’s incredible live performance through folky vocals and precise psychedelic instrumentation as well as the Hall’s layered audio visual design created the perfect atmosphere to encapsulate this performance.
With the band’s extensive catalog of songs spread out over three nights, the shows at MGM Music Hall felt like a love letter to fans, with the band playing deep-cut songs such as “Loose Ends” and “Mais Que Nada.”
Goose also debuted new songs including “One In, One Out” and a cover of “My Mind Has Been Consumed by Media” from drummer Cottor Ellis’ band Swimmer. Ellis also performed lead vocals on this new cover, which marked only his second time singing lead vocals with the band.
Before their final show on Sept. 4, Goose stopped by WERS 88.9 in Emerson’s Ansin Building to play songs and chat in a radio interview that would be played on the airwaves later that day.
After they set up, tightly packing the five piece group into the small studio space, the band effortlessly launched into an acoustic version of “Madhuvan,” followed by “Western Sun” and ending with “Hungersite.”
On their last night at MGM, Goose played an “‘80s synth version” of “Indian River” taking the six-minute, reggae-inspired studio track and turning it into nearly a 20-minute behemoth with faster paced guitar riffs and heavy synths. In the same set, they also performed the ending to a previously unfinished song “Echo of a Rose,” which had been played in its incomplete form the night before.
The second set consisted of a groovy and funky version of “Thatch” and ended with Otis Day & The Knights’ “Shama Lama Ding Dong,” a classic Goose cover.
This unique version of “Thatch” was posted to the band’s YouTube shortly after the performance.
With Three of Goose’s members attending Berklee in Boston, it feels like the band has come full circle playing such a successful run.
Goose’s tour continues through November, with four shows scheduled in December for “Goosemas” and their New Year’s Performances in North Charleston, SC and Austin, TX respectively.
