Jay Leno to return to television

Jay Leno is putting down his late night mic and picking up a tire iron for his return to television.

CNBC announced Wednesday that the former “Tonight Show” star and Emerson alumnus will be getting his own TV show, tentatively titled “Jay Leno’s Garage.”

Based on the already successful web series of the same name, the show will focus on the car collecting market and Leno’s passion for all things automotive.

“This show will be about anything that rolls, explodes, and makes noise,” said Leno in a statement to CNBC. “We hope to highlight the passion and the stories behind the men and women who made the automobile the greatest invention of the 20th century.”

In August, Leno hosted a one-hour special called “Jay Leno’s Garage: The Ultimate Car Week.” This was the first time Leno had returned to primetime on NBC since his departure from the network in February.

The announcement comes less than a year after Leno, 64, retired from the Tonight Show for a second time. The primetime series is set to begin in 2015.
