On Wednesday, The Berkeley Beacon published an article titled ‘Hamas’ Attack: A Tragedy for Israel and a Death Knell for Palestine,’ written by Staff Writer Camilo Fonseca. The piece aimed to reflect on the Israel-Palestine conflict, asserting that current events have made a two-state solution improbable. It did not set out to assign blame or responsibility for the conflict to any one side. Instead, it was meant to emphasize the difficult situation faced by the Palestinian people.
Our opinion section is committed to publishing content that is not inflammatory, misinformed, or biased. We stand by our writers’ right to express their opinions in this manner, though we acknowledge that this viewpoint does not represent the opinion of all our editors, nor is it affiliated to specific sections of the Beacon. Opinion editors are not responsible for agreeing or disagreeing with their writers but rather elevate everyone’s specific voice.
As a student publication, we often find ourselves in the position to seek more help from more experienced reporters to write and publish articles in a more accurate and sensitive manner. We are working on restarting our Advisory Board, which is overseen by section editors and was started by former staff members Diti Kohli and Katie Redefer in 2020, to have a more established checks-and-balances. We operate according to our constitution, which provides a detailed explanation of how our editing chain functions. We convene weekly, both as individual editors and as an organization, to discuss the pitches for the upcoming week. The majority of our content is also reviewed by our advisor, James Sullivan.
Fonseca’s article in particular has been reviewed by our advisor James Sullivan and adjunct faculty Rachel Layne.
We appreciate the input of all Emerson College students and encourage any discerning opinions to be voiced on the Beacon.
