The college has appointed Raul Reis as the new dean of the School of Communication, according to an email sent to the Emerson community by Michaele Whelan, chief academic officer.

Starting in July, Reis will succeed Phillip Glenn, who has served as interim dean of the department since 2012.

Reis comes to Emerson from his post as dean and tenured professor at Florida International University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Miami. He has held that position since 2011, according to the email. There, Reis created two undergraduate and a graduate programs, increased enrollment by 200 students, and raised $300 million in gifts to the college.

Before FIU, Reis was a tenured professor and department chair at California State University, Long Beach.

Reis has published multiple books and academic journals on the subject of communication. Reis also worked as a journalist both in his native country of Brazil and in the United States, where he reported stories on politics, sports, and science.

“Dr. Reis brings with him a strong record of academic growth and visionary leadership, and an in-depth global perspective on communication and media,” Whelan wrote in the email.

The search committee for this position included William Anderson, graduate program director of integrated marketing communication; Amy Ansell, dean of liberal arts; Miranda Banks, associate professor of visual and media arts; Catherine D’Ignazio, assistant professor of journalism; Kelly Farquharson, assistant professor of communication sciences and disorders; Linda Gallant, graduate program director of the department of communication studies; and Donna Heiland, vice president and special assistant to the president.
