Dr. James Hoppe will be the new Vice President and Dean for Campus Life, effective July 2016, according to an email from President M. Lee Pelton on Tuesday.

Hoppe will succeed Ronald Ludman, who retired after the spring 2015 semester. Former Associate Dean Sharon Duffy took over as Interim Dean of Student Life beginning in fall 2015. Hoppe has a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Saint Louis University.

Hoppe is currently acting as Dean of Students at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has 26 years of experience in higher education. He will be moving to Boston with his husband and children, according to Pelton.

At Emerson, Hoppe will oversee Athletics, Career Services, Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services, Housing and Residence Life, Student Activities, Multicultural/GLBTQ Student Affairs, and Spiritual Life, and working with both Emerson Los Angeles and Kasteel Well.

According to the email, Hoppe will help foster a greater sense of community and advance inclusive excellence. Pelton wrote that Hoppe will need time to “assess and prioritize the numerous opportunities for enhancing and strengthening” the college.
