Newbury Street salon styles for student savers

There are hair stylists and salons up and down Newbury Street, mixed in with small office buildings and high-end stores such as Chanel and Juicy Couture. When you’re looking for a place to trim your ends and lighten your roots, finding the right hairstylist at the right place-at the right price-can be quite the challenge.

With a little help from online coupons and other special offers, however, even those fancy Newbury salons can be a little more financially feasible.

ACOTE SALON 132 NEWBURY ST., 2nd flooR

Acote, with its slogan “Simplicity is the essence of beauty,” offers a relaxing atmosphere with stress-busting amenities to soothe your mind as you wait for your appointment. An outdoor patio and cappuccino/wine bar make it the ideal place to wait around for the stylist. Acote offers cuts and color treatments for both men and women, starting at $40 and $50 respectively. However, if you want to cut down on that price, go to CitySearch.com’s Web site and print out the salon’s coupon for a free haircut with any coloring.

For an even better deal, head to Acote with a friend and get both haircuts for the price of one with another online coupon. In addition to the standard cut and color, Acote offers lip waxing ($10), eyebrow waxing ($20), and other services, such as the pricey Bio Ionic hair straightening, relaxing, perms and up-dos.

runway salon 11 newbury st., 3rd floor

Self-proclaimed to be “Boston’s only true European salon,” Runway has been getting a lot of publicity for its talented stylists. The salon has been featured in Elle and Vogue, and was also seen on an episode of TLC’s “A Makeover Story.” Services include cuts, color, perms, relaxing, conditioning treatments and special-occasion hairdos. Prices vary, depending on whether your appointment is with a junior or senior stylist, but be prepared to shell out at least $60 for a basic cut and blow dry. Currently, however, the salon is accepting a $25 “V.I.P” coupon, which is the first thing you’ll see on its Web site. With this offer, you’ll get a great discount on a cut and blow dry.

For an even cheaper alternative, Runway is looking for “hair models” to help train new stylists. Your appointment will be under total supervision by the seasoned experts, and a cut will cost only $15, with $20 for color.

umi SALON 75 NEWBURY ST.

Umi’s founder, Jeffrey Dauksevich, has recently been recognized by Allure magazine as the best colorist in Boston, and Elle named Umi the “coolest” salon in the city. Boston magazine has named it as the Best Hair Salon several times, and it has also been recognized by the Improper Bostonian and CitySearch’s annual awards.

Dauksevich’s services, however, have also been named the most expensive haircuts in Boston. A session with him will run you about $300, which is probably way out of the acceptable price range for any college student. Although a regular-priced Umi haircut is quite steep (around $100), this salon’s hair modeling opportunities are unbeatable. There is a model call every Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., and the $100 haircuts are free for models.

Occasionally, Umi will charge up to $30 for coloring, but that’s a real deal from the “best colorist in Boston.”

It’s always possible to get quality service at a really good price if you do a little digging. Most salons have the modeling option, which gets you the professional service at a huge discount.

If you’re hesitant to experiment with a stylist-in-training, many salons offer coupons through their Web sites to help draw in new business, and the Student Saver books that are often scattered around campus have many coupons for salons all over the city.
