Possible Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton would soundly defeat Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren in a Democratic presidential primary held in the state, according to part of a recent Emerson College Polling Society poll conducted to gauge local opinion on political, athletic, and social issues.
ECPS conducted the poll via telephone from March 14 – 19, hearing from 798 Massachusetts residents. In addition to the Clinton vs. Warren question, the poll asked the public about Boston’s bid for the 2024 summer Olympics, the Patriots’ offseason, Governor Charlie Baker, and the Dzhokhar Tsarnaev trial.
Christine Kane, the co-president of ECPS, said she was surprised by some of the results of the survey—mostly with the result of Clinton having a sizeable lead over Warren, with Clinton holding 43 percent to Warren’s 16 percent, in a speculative Democrat presidential primary.
“Obviously there’s a lot of popular sentiment towards Warren. So, for Clinton to do that well in Warren’s home state, I thought that was very interesting and the margin was surprising,” Kane said.
Kane said she was not completely surprised by the results concerning Tsarnaev, the accused Boston Marathon bomber, for which 52 percent responded that he should face the death penalty, while 23 percent were opposed, and 25 percent were undecided.
