Polling Society joins Transparency Initiative

Last week, the Emerson College Polling Society affirmed its commitment to unbiased research methods and credibility by becoming a member of the American Association of Public Opinion Research Transparency Initiative.

Joining the Transparency Initiative places ECPS among over 20 major polling organizations, including The Washington Post, the Pew Research Center, and the Gallup Organization, according to Emerson’s website.

Junior Hannah Ritter, a co-president of ECPS, said the new initiative won’t change ECPS, but rather strengthens its existing approach.

“ECPS’s policy has always been really transparent, so it really wasn’t an issue as far as changing our policies. We just had to apply,” said Ritter, a communication studies major. “So we just reaffirmed our values of making our data and our methodology available.”

ECPS has also surpassed the Transparency Initiative’s criteria by releasing the raw data from its surveys, an uncommon move for polling organizations, according to faculty advisor Spencer Kimball.

“Because we’re an academic institution, I felt that for our students it was the right thing to do.” Kimball said.

The ECPS’s latest polls cover subjects like the New England Patriots’ recent football deflation controversy and Boston’s bid for the 2024 Olympics.
