It was the contribution of a freshman that sealed a victory on senior day, the Lions’ final game of the regular season.
Freshman guard Jeremy Shannon, who scored a game high 18 points, sealed the deal for Emerson with four clutch free-throws down the stretch. With the win, the Lions finished their season 16-8, including a 12-4 record in the GNAC.
“I didn’t think we defended very well at the beginning of the game,” Emerson Head Coach Hank Smith said. “That really hurt us.”
Emerson played the final eight minutes without junior Co-Captain Ben Chase, who fouled out. Seniors Will Sagar and Alfredo Tovar scored 11 points in the game, while classmate Scott McGowan added 10.
The Lions stole the spotlight with two minutes to go after battling back and forth for the lead for six minutes. They gained control of the game thanks to Shannon shooting 4-for-4 from the line, freshman Max Silver making a field goal and a free throw, and 3 McGowan free throws.
Shannon believed that his teammates are responsible for his ability to conquer the court offensively.
“I play the way I play because my teammates allow me to,” Shannon said. “The guys are always looking back to see when I’ll have a scoring opportunity.”
Smith said the difference was free-throws.
“At the end of the game we executed and hit free throws which you have to do in close games,” he said.
Junior Co-Captain Will Dawkins was happy with his team’s performance.
“The team stepped up,” Dawkins said. “All of the seniors were in double figures. We had a great all-around game.”
Sagar was glad to end his regular season career with the Lions on a good note.
“I’m glad I finally had a good game at home,” Sagar said. “It was great. I had all my soccer teammates here and my basketball team.”
