The Student Government Association released an official response last week on its blog to a Beacon opinion piece that called for the creation of a student union.

According to Executive President Emily Solomon, a junior visual and media arts major, SGA said it wrote the response to alleviate misconceptions and establish an official position regarding a student union designed to examine ways to lower tuition.

“My number one priority is doing my best to make sure students are informed,” Solomon said in an interview.

The SGA response mentioned several potential problems for the college if a tuition freeze was enacted, including a loss in revenue and, subsequently, a decrease in financial aid.

Solomon also acknowledged what is at stake if the cost of attending Emerson continues to go up.

“It is absolutely an issue that rising tuition prices create a situation where Emerson is more likely to become more homogenous than it already is,” Solomon said.

According to Solomon, SGA is willing to work with a student union focused on lowering tuition if one were created.

“We welcome their formation,” Solomon said. “We want to engage in discussion with them, and we are 110 percent willing to help them with anything they need.”
