The Student Government Association approved 10 constitutional amendments for students to vote on in the April 3 and April 4 elections.
Marketing Communications Senator and Executive Vice President candidate Will Palauskas suggested an amendment that allows SGA to create new senatorial positions for academic programs that exist outside of any single department. This includes the current business of creative enterprises major and the upcoming public relations major.
“When the public relations major comes out there’s going to be a need for students who might want to represent that, and I think there’s a lot of increased interest in SGA now,” he said. “A lot of these majors [and] a lot of these students want to see their major specifically represented in SGA.”
Another amendment would forbid students from running for a position if they have already undergone impeachment proceedings in that same position.
“If [a majority of] joint session collectively agree that a person should no longer be serving in the middle of their term, then I think that brings into question their eligibility in any kind of service position in SGA,” Performing Arts Senator Josh Schussler said.
SGA closed the meeting after passing the amendments to meet with Graduate Assistant Yewande Adigun about mental health on campus. Executive President Jess Guida said she moved to close the meeting to allow SGA members to speak more freely about mental health. Chief Justice Brilee Carey agreed and said if Adigun brought unpublished results of surveys, SGA should not publically share them.
