SGA grants $5,362 to sorority’s fashion show benefiting cancer charity

The Emerson chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi received $5,362 Tuesday from the Student Government Association for their annual fashion show Ribbons on the Runway.

Senior Kathy Andrade, event chair of Ribbons on the Runway, said the fashion show began seven years ago when the mother of a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi’s was diagnosed with breast cancer and the Emerson chapter of the sorority wanted to support her. In the past, she said the event was mainly for family and friends of the sorority.

Andrade, who presented the appeal, said her committee wants the event to have better attendance from the Emerson community this year. They will be improving the runway and lighting with hopes of drawing larger crowds she said.

“We want to make this more of a sophisticated, sexy event,” Andrade, a broadcast journalism major, said. “Almost all of the money will go towards staging and lighting. We are working with a design technology major who is working with vendors to create more of a fashion-show look.”

Last year, Ribbons on the Runway raised $4,500 for Susan G. Koman for the Cure. Andrade said her goal for this year is to raise $5,000 for Sharsheret, a not-for-profit group that supports Jewish women battling breast cancer and ovarian cancer, according to their website.

“We are really grateful for all the efforts of the students,” said Ellen Kleinhaus, Sharsheret’s project manager. “With their support and their efforts we’ll be able to educate and empower the college students and really save lives.”

Andrade said the group appealed for more funds after their initial budget from the SGA did not cover the additions to this year’s fashion show.

“We didn’t have a set budget last year, and the last chair didn’t keep too great of a record of what was spent,” Andrade said of their account for the show. “We wanted to change this year. So we made a set budget … but that was not enough to do all things we discussed.”

The committee received $1,350 in co-sponsorships from six different Emerson organizations and is contributing $800 from their own budget.

According to a statement from Emerson Hillel, the Hillel Council of New England will donate $200 towards a gift basket for the fundraiser and the Israeli Campus Roundtable will pay for the cost of Kosher food, of which Emerson Hillel will donate $180 towards.

Earlier this semester, the Fashion Society was granted $7,788.86 from the SGA for their spring fashion show. During the presentation of the Ribbons on the Runway appeal, Andrade said the Fashion Society amounts were “well above what [they] are asking for.”

All SGA members voted in favor of the appeal.
