SGA talks student concerns, fitness center

The Student Government Association compiled a list of student life concerns—including student meeting space availability, student working hours, on-campus safety, and study abroad programs—on Tuesday to present to the Board of Trustees.

Emily Solomon, executive president and undergraduate representative to the Board of Trustees, will meet with the Trustees to discuss these things in two weeks.

Faith D’Isa, individually designed interdisciplinary programs senator, raised concerns about the inclusiveness of study abroad and off-campus programs. She said it is necessary to highlight all aspects of the study abroad and domestic programs because these opportunities should be seized by students of all majors. Many students assume certain study abroad programs are geared toward certain majors when in fact they provide quality programs for all.

“The most unexpected majors have the best experiences in Los Angeles,” D’Isa said.

D’Isa, an IDIP entertainment and arts marketing and management major, thought the Los Angeles program was primarily for visual and media arts majors. Her advisor, Martie Cook, professor and associate chair of the department, recommended that she attend the semester in LA because there is less competition within her major to build connections and different job opportunities than in the northeast.

Journalism senator Sam Amore emphasized the need to increase accessibility to internships for students throughout the country. The suggested route may not be preferred by certain students, they said, so there is a need for other options to segue students into the national media scene.

“If you don’t start off with a national media internship and you are trying to get into national media, it is really hard to get there,” Amore said. “We should do a better job at making more connections in other parts of the country.”

SGA reviewed the timeline for the upcoming student government election. Applications for SGA representative positions will be available Oct. 31. Positions that are not filled by a full year representative in January 2017 will be open to applicants. The class of 2020 will be voting for their freshman Class Council representatives in this election.

Visual and media arts senator Lucie McCormick was appointed to the Spirit of Emerson Committee. The committee gives the Spirit of Emerson Award to no more than two individuals that increase the radiance, reputation, and creative expression of the College.

Class of 2017 President Michael O’Connor visited the potential site for the temporary fitness center with McCormick. He said the space should be viewed as a temporary upgrade during Little Building construction, though the plans to relocate the fitness center have not been approved. The fitness center in the Little Building will close next semester.

Communication Studies senator Dylan Walton reported he is talking with the the department chair, Gregory Payne, and Academic Affairs to rename specific courses to accurately depict the professor’s expertise because of the disparity between courses.

Next week, SGA will vote to re-ratify its bylaws.
