Lions point guard Jeremy Shannon, a sophomore marketing communications major, has been named Player of Year and Defensive Player of the Year for men’s basketball by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Shannon has also been named a first team All-Conference selection.
Shannon averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for Emerson basketball in 2007-2008. He has also recorded 102 assists, 39 steals, 14 blocked shots and 99 defensive rebounds. Shannon was the top scorer for the Lions in seven games and led in rebounds for10 games.
The Lions’ coach, Hank Smith, has been named Coach of the Year for leading the team to a 22-3 season, the best in program history. He also won the award in 1997 and 2001. He joined Emerson in 1994 after working as an assistant coach at Salem State.
Senior forwards Ben Chase and Will Dawkins were named to the GNAC All-Conference second and third teams, respectively. Chase led the Lions in scoring this season with 17.9 points per game, while Dawkins contributed 15.8 points per game.
