Two alumni producers get award recognition

Arrival: Aaron Ryder

In the heady sci-fi flick Arrival, linguist Louise Banks uses her expertise to communicate with strange aliens in an unusual monolithic spacecraft. Producer Aaron Ryder, ‘94, worked on the film, nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. The movie was also nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others. The film aired at the first Bright Lights Film Series’ spring screening, and Ryder Skyped in to talk to students and community members. Arrival was also nominated for several other awards, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Loving: Sarah Green

Loving tells the true tale of a husband and wife arrested for their marriage in 1958. Their case was taken all the way to the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia, resulting in a federal knockdown of interracial marriage laws. Bright Lights is planning a screening for this semester with producer Sarah Green, ‘81. Green has worked on other award-winning projects like Frida, State and Main, and The New World. Loving received the Producers Guild’s Stanley Kramer Award, given to a work that promotes awareness of prominent social issues. Keep an eye out for it at the Academy Awards—Ruth Negga, who plays Mildred Loving, is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
