Special elections are currently underway to fill the positions of Student Government Association communication and sciences disorders senator and class of 2013 treasurer, left open after no students showed interest in the spots last semester.

Katie Ruggiero, a sophomore, is the only candidate running for the role of communication sciences and disorders senator. Ruggiero said she decided to run at the urging of her suitemate, and that she hopes to raise student awareness of her department. .

“It’s really small, but we work really hard,” Ruggiero said of her fellow communication sciences and disorders students. “It’s the only science major, and I want to get our name out there. When you think of Emerson, you don’t think of science … so I want to change that.”

Ruggiero said that before running for the position, she didn’t know much about student government. However, Tobey Zaretsky, the candidate for class of 2013 treasurer, said she has always been interested in the inner workings of fundraising and budgets for student organizations.

“I always like the logical sense of being a treasurer. There is no emotion attached to money,” the junior political communication major said.

Votes can be cast at  vote.emerson.edu until 11:59 tonight. Although Ruggiero and Zaretsky are the only candidates, students can write in other candidates.
