Emerson women’s basketball matched its highest scoring game of the season Thursday night, winning 90-51 against Lasell College.

3-pointers played a major role in the Lions’ high scoring game, as they sunk a season high 15, including four from junior Natalie Busch late in the game and three from senior Maya Savino.

Emerson head coach Bill Gould said he felt the Lions had the upper hand going into the game and that they needed to execute to come out on top.

“I really liked the way we moved the ball to get open shots,” Gould said. “When we get some of those good shots early, it gets a rhythm going.”

Savino and sophomore Natalie Clydesdale played major roles in setting up open shots, as the two led the Lions with 6 assists each. Gould said freshman Ashley Toner moved the ball around well for the Lions by completing several passes that kept the ball from Lasell.

Emerson’s leading scorer this season, Kate Foultz, entered the game with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter while the Lions were down 9-7. She quickly scored a layup and two 3-pointers, and Emerson closed the opening quarter with a slight lead.

Coming into the second quarter, freshman Rachel Davey sunk back-to-back 3-pointers for the Lions. Emerson outscored Lasell 28-4 in the second quarter. Clydesdale and Foultz were key performers in the second quarter. Clydesdale collected four defensive rebounds, a 3-pointer, and a field goal. Foultz had three rebounds and three assists.

Clydesdale led the team in rebounds, tying her season-high of 10. She also contributed 9 points. These points put her just one shot from her second career double double.

Coming off a double double in her last game against Emmanuel College, sophomore Dana Ross secured 12 rebounds for the Lasers–just two more than Clydesdale for the Lions.

Lasell senior Morgan Church picked up 19 points, making her the top scorer of the day. Emerson junior Charlie Boyle led the Lions with 13 points. Busch and Emerson sophomore Quinn Madden also racked up double digit point totals with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The last time Emerson faced Lasell in December 2016, junior Charlie Boyle led the Lions to a narrow 51-40 victory. Boyle said the 39-point scoring difference shows the team’s improvement over the year.

“Last year, we played this team and we didn’t win by that much so we were really looking to prove how much we’ve grown,” Boyle said. “I think we did that.”

Boyle also said she attributes the Lions’ blowout victory to good communication and teamwork.

“I think we had energy from the very beginning and we didn’t let up,” Boyle said. “We just made our shots today and we looked for that extra pass. We were very unselfish with the ball.”

Emerson will follow this strong performance with a crucial conference game Feb. 10 against Mount Holyoke at 1 p.m. in the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym. Senior day festivities will also be held.
